Christopher Kanan

Associate Professor of Computer Science, University of Rochester

Christopher Kanan is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Rochester. His lab conducts basic and applied research in deep learning. His lab focuses on lifelong learning and other tasks that are prerequisite capabilities for artificial general intelligence. Much of his work takes inspiration from neuroscience. Prior to joining the University of Rochester, he was an Associate Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he helped launch AI initiatives for the university, including co-founding RIT’s Center for Human-aware AI. While at RIT, he was also an executive at the medical AI startup Paige, where he led the company’s AI R&D team resulting in the first FDA approved computer vision system for helping pathologists diagnose cancer. He now serves on their Scientific Advisory Board. He received a PhD in computer science from the University of California at San Diego and an MS in computer science from the University of Southern California.
