Dr. Pranela Rameshwar, PhD

Professor, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School

Dr. Pranela Rameshwar serves as a professor in the Hematology and Oncology Division within the Department of Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, USA. She attained her B.S. degree in medical microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned her Ph.D. in biology from Rutgers University. Dr. Rameshwar furthered her training as a postdoctoral fellow in hematopoiesis at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.


Her research, rooted in translational science, predominantly centers on stem cells, cancer (specifically breast and brain), and immuno/hematopoietic aging. Dr. Rameshwar's laboratory actively explores methods utilizing adult stem cells as carriers for drug delivery, notably in glioblastoma treatment. Her investigations into breast cancer dormancy within bone marrow focus on cancer stem cells and microvesicles. Additionally, her research delves into neural regulation of hematopoiesis and the immunology of adult human mesenchymal stem cells.


Dr. Rameshwar's academic contributions encompass nearly 200 publications, comprising original articles, reviews, editorials, and book chapters. She has also edited books and has been actively involved in teaching. Her initiatives include launching a certificate program in stem cell biology and teaching four graduate-level courses in the same field. Recognized as a university master educator, she has mentored numerous doctoral students, including those in the physician-scientist track and junior faculty.


Her academic pursuits extend globally, involving invited seminars, journal activities, and grant reviews, both nationally and internationally.
